QUESTION: What is proof in support of calling “As-Salatu Khairum-minan-Naum” in the Azan for Fajir, Also certain people add ‘Yayya ‘Ala Khairil Amal” in the Azan. Does it have any real basis in the Shariah?

ANSWER: It is proven from the tradition of the Holy Prophet (may blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) that he (S.A.W.) had ordered Bilal and Mahzoorah (may Allah be happy with them) to call “As-Salatu-Khairum-minan Naum in the Azan and it is reported on the authority of Anas (may Allah be happy with him) that he said: “It is sunnat to pronounce: “As-Salatu Khairum-Minan-Naum” (Prayer is better than sleep) in dawn prayer”. (Sahih Ibne Khuzaimah)

According to most appropriate opinion of ‘Ulama, these wordings shall be called in the time called at the time of real break of dawn; and with reference to Iqamah, this Azan itself is first Azan and Iqamah is second Azan, as there goes a commandment of the Prophet (may blessing and peace of Allah be upon him); “There is a salat between the two Azan”.

In Saheeh Bukhari, a Hadith on the same import is reported is on the authority of ‘Aisha (may Allah be happy with her) too. So far as the practice, of a section of Shites, of adding “Yayya ‘ala Khair-il-Amal” is concerned, so, it is an origination (Bida’at) in all its respects and there is no real basis for it in sound Hadiths.

It is prayed to Allah, the Most High, that He bestow upon them as well as upon all Muslims the adaptation of following the tradition of Prophet (may blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) as well as of remaining steadfast on it; because just this is the part of salvation and a means of obtaining good-luck. However, Allah is the supporter of the adaptation.
